Situated south of Moss Vale on the escarpment above the Shoalhaven River, Bungonia has the largest State Recreation Area in New South Wales.

The Recreation Area covers an area of 3893 hectares and is characterised by dry sclerophyll forests, deep limestone gorges and caves, and is the home for over 300 types of flora and 70 varieties of bird life.

Bungonia is a very historical community, as it was an important stopover point in the 1820s but was by-passed by the Sydney Goulburn road as early as 1833. The most significant building in the village is St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, which is the oldest Catholic Church in Australia.
